Before you have one placed on your pet, check out the handout below to know how to activate and record data from the sensor.
TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) is a specialized orthopedic surgery to correct CCL tears in the stifle (knee). Because it has such specific rest and recovery instructions, please read this document that outlines our recommendations for up to 16 weeks post-op.
Post-Operative Instructions – General Surgery Recommendations
These instructions are for general surgical procedures such as spay, neuter, excision (mass removal), dental procedures, etc. They may be different from the individual instructions sent home with your pet. If you have questions or there are conflicting instructions, please call the office at 360.659.0877 for clarification.
Incision
- Your pet may have sutures in the skin and will need these removed in 14 days. There may also be internal sutures that will dissolve after a few weeks.
- Minor amounts of redness, swelling, or discharge around the incision can be normal, but if it seems excessive, give us a call for further instructions. There may be mild bruising or fluid accumulation around the incision site over the next 3-4 days but this should improve over time.
- Keep the e-collar on for at least the next 10-14 days to prevent licking of the incision. It can be removed for your pet to eat and drink only if you are able to directly and constantly monitor it while it is off. Most of the time, an animal will adjust well to the e-collar and can eat and drink with it on.
- Please wait two weeks before bathing or getting the incision area wet.
Food and Water
- You can offer a small amount of food and water tonight, but often animals do not eat or drink much right after surgery. Be careful- excessive water or food the same day as surgery may cause vomiting. Feeding in small amounts will help prevent vomiting.
- Your pet should resume normal water and food consumption the day after surgery.
Exercise
- Please keep your pet warm, quiet, and resting for the next 48 hours.
- Activity should be restricted for the next 14 days. It would be best if you can confine your pet to a quiet room or small area at home, especially for the first few days.
- Your pet may be a bit sleepy for the rest of the day from the anesthesia, which is normal. He or she may also vocalize more than normal but this should subside over the next 12 to 24 hours. There may be minor weakness or disorientation for a period lasting up to 24 hours as an after-effect of the anesthetic. As a precaution, keep your pet away from areas where it could fall or be injured.
Monitoring
Call a veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Decreased appetite after a few days
- Licking or chewing at incision
- Bleeding
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Swelling or discharge at surgical site
Post-surgery Pain Medication
- Please follow all directions on medications sent home and discussed verbally by your tech. If you have any questions about medications, give us a call for clarification.
